PARK OVERVIEW - A walk through history

The sound of eight majestic flags fluttering above will welcome visitors as they cross the Flag Plaza entrance to the Park.

An open pavilion structure will house a multi-station computerized kiosk. Through the kiosk, visitors to the Park will be able to search for memorials by name, unit, conflict, Service Branch or gender. In addition to providing the location of memorialized names within the Park, the kiosk will provide access to:

  • Personalized memorials including the name of the service member, date and location of death, unit and Service Branch, and may include a short bio, story and picture of the fallen service member.

  • History of the conflicts, including text, pictures and video clips.

  • History of Service Branches and their specific campaigns.

  • Video display featuring the Service Branches, the conflicts, and history of Fort Lewis.

    Upon leaving the pavilion area, visitors will seem to travel through time as they pass by blade walls stationed at the memorial location of each conflict. The images of Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and Sailors in conflict-era uniform will be depicted in relief, carved into the polished granite structures. Below those images will be a description of each conflict.

    As visitors walk along a meandering path to the sound of crushed granite beneath their feet, they will read the names of our fallen service members who lost their lives during that conflict, which have been engraved on basalt boulders.

    Continuing from WWI, visitors will travel past each conflict's memorial and move towards the reflecting pond, which is representative of the eternal hope for peace.
